I didnt vote cause it didnt list my symptoms. My truck still ran with a miss and some black smoke. Of course this is one of the first batch of 24 valves. I dont usually buy something thats new. I try to let them get the bugs out first. Look at the first year explorers. When I saw her there looking all fine I had to have her.

THESE polls - in groups like this - will usually be pretty slanted and misleading - and CERTAINLY don't usually particularly follow nation-wide real-life statistics! They ARE of value in obtaining info for use in determing best indications of existing problems, and various fixs for them - but to look at THIS poll and then assume a national 20% failure rate is NOT realistic!

YET-----

'44 not dead YET. but I had a LP going bad... . 2psi@WOT and a burning smell from the driver's side of the engine when really working it.

So I'm guess now , with and education from the fine folks on this board, that my '44 was getting damn hot... stinking up a storm... and it should be dying soon.

Took a 3 hour ordeal with my dealer to have them finally get permission from the STar line to have the LP changed. After the tech spoke with the Star line Cummin's tech, the dealer tech told the service manager , yup the customer's right the LP is dead and it usually takes out the '44... ...

So lets see when I get freekin stuck cause of a LP allowing my '44 to over heat. I'm darn mad at myself for not putting in the fuel pressure gauge last year when or before the burning smell started to show up when working the truck.

My Y2K had the origional lift pump replaced at 70,000 mi. Now the truck has 125,000mi with the origional VP44 and the 2nd lp pumping 16psi at idle. I don't know what it is doing at WOT.

DEZLPWR, you weren't a math major in college were you? :D I bet you will get 10 times the number of dead VP44's from this group versus the real world. Reason? Most of the members have modified fuel systems that will make this problem worse. What blows me away is that many of the members that had modified fuel systems had their VP44 replaced under warranty.

Nope, business major. If you re-read my post, I said ACCORDING TO THIS POLL. Obviously, a poll of 1 million 24v owners would show less than a 20% failure rate. (I certainly would hope so!:D ) I was just trying to light a fire under the a$$es of those who have chosen not to vote!Oo. Oo.

It would be interesting to have the real numbers. If I was not a CTD nut and belonged to the TDR, I would still be driving around with a dead lift pump.

VP44 IS DEAD

Well its official my run no run condition is my vp44 in its death throes. To isolate the pump they have a simulated ecm to plug into it. If it doesnt run the problem is not electrical. If it does run its the ecm. I just voted. This is injection pump #2 first one failed early with the truck bone stock. If Ive lost two dont I get to vote twice. LOL. I just brought the national average up . 000001 percent. I know of a man on his 4th pump. Can I vote for him. I also know of a man on his 4th transmission and everybody has at least there third torque converter.

P. S. As for more failure rates on the tdr that is an assumption. The tdr members are 10 times less likely to have a lift pump take out there injection pump imnsho. Skews the numbers a bit on failure rates.

103,000 miles on my '98. 5 with a 6/98 build date. I've had a Powermax on it since ~30,000 miles. I've gone through 4 lift pumps (run a dual pump Carter setup for the last 45,000 miles). I soldered the pump wire connection 2 weeks ago because I was sick of dealing with the scotch lock connection there. I lucked out and got a good VP44 I guess (knocking on wood).

Dead VP44

Got my 98. 5 at 125,000 miles, was never bombed. Put in gauges and saw that the LP was flaky (don't know if it was the original), 9 psi, 3 psi, 0 psi, all over the place. I put a Edge Comp on, pierced wire, ran for a few weeks w/out problems, seemed to have a little stumble, but switched comp boxes and stuble went away. Never really went on 5/5 often, but one night the pump failed after lifting off from WOT. I think that running stock the VP would have gone for at least another 100k, even with the bad LP. I think the VP was too weak to handle bombing after running the bad LP for so long.
