So the issue is what can you air down a 19.5 to vs 20 inch for comfort when not fully loaded. Also, plenty of 20 inch with up to 3700-4000 lbs per tire so plenty of load capacity, tire selection and variation in air pressure ability the way 19.5 seed and standard rims, no?
Well this would be my alternative to a 200K+ dedicated camper. The way I look at this currently is that I have the camper paid off, loaded excellent condition 2017 Limited 3500 that should get me something on resale so replace with 4500 or 5500 but set up as a camper rig but I would also use as my truck daily drive until I get wife a new rig (thinking turbo acura MDX we just love our 2014 here in Reno, smooth, good milage, quick enough and excellent AWD, arguably the best AWD system made to date). Anyway if I get her another car selling my children to pay for both then I would go to her older MDX for daily driver. So this would be a long term investment (Im 63 this year, ouch) and I dont see replacing it in my lifetime. Would sell it down the road and hotel my vacations from there and daily fly fishing trips if I can still walk
We want something that doesnt call for planning a year in advance to get a 5th wheel into. Be able to go on Fridays after work up and down the Sierras and get to Idaho, Washington and Oregon without having to do much pre planning and just be able to camp where we end up. Still working for the next few years at least so flexibility important over that time.
With that said I am still wondering if my 3500 with 4K overload springs is really any stiffer than a 4500 or 5500. I have heard people who have driven both say they cant tell the difference and perhaps this is because the first spring to engage is about the same and then when you hit the big pack thats when things get really stiff. At that point perhaps the sway control offered by the larger spring pack would be worth going to 5500, heck the price isnt really different. I see people putting air suspension on the 5500 but would not there be more sway doing that and just defeat the whole purpose. i e how can you have sway control and soft suspension at the same time. I would go with steel flatbed and steel storage to add weight to help a little. People worried about rust and go to aluminum but I am not worried about that if painted properly.
Hi, On my 5500 with OEM 225 70R 19.5G, I never aired below 80 PSI and now with 265 70R 19.5s is min 90 PSI. My unloaded weight on my 5500 is 12,200 Lbs. When going to taller tires on my 5500, I never considered changing from 19.5s to 20s.
I would follow min inflation tables published for the tire size and weight of your vehicle. I wouldn't deviate, as commercial tires don't air down similarly to standard tires. The sidewalls are thicker and generate a lot of heat if aired below recommended PSI.
