I flushed my entire brake system with new Valvoline type 3/4 synthetic fluid.

WOW what a difference!.

I had no idea my brakes were getting progressively worse till I changed the fluid. :--)

It is the best 5 bucks and 1 hour upgrade yet!. :)

The pedal is right tight up at the top.

Feels like a brand new truck!

I did the poor man style flush and bleed.

1) Removed all the old fluid from the Master cyl. and wiped clean with lint free paper towels.

2) Added new fluid.

3) Opened all the bleeders.

4) Connected clear plastic tubing to the bleeders and ran the tubing into old oil containers for proper disposal/recycling.

5) I then pumed the brakes with the bleeders open while adding fluid as needed.

6) After I had used about 16 oz. of fluid I did a standard pump it 3 times and bleed proceedure. starting from the right rear wheel.

Great results!

You got 3/4 synthetic for $5. 00? At what quantity? Your post reads; "After I had used about 16 oz. of fluid I did a standard pump it 3 times and bleed proceedure. starting from the right rear wheel. " So did you get two quarts at $5 each or $5 for the both - not being a wise arse just wondering where you get "3/4" valvoline @ $5. 00 each? So I can do likewise

Do you think the synthetic made the difference, or just the new fluid? I always try to keep my brake fluids clean and dry, but never tried switching to a syn.

I borrowed my buddys Snap-on Brake bleeder machine to do all my Cars /Trucks over the last month , and talk about quick and easy! Very nice product(but expensive).

In my beater(95 lumina) it looked like someone put used motor oil inside ! It was that bad. From what he said, its not the fluid going bad, its the lines breaking down or moisture that collects, ect.

I put synthetic back in( (carquest or Napa brand ??) . It is worth the time and money.

My guess is the synthetic is part of the solution.

I'm sure new fluid of any type would make a noticable difference. (Mine looked like used motor oil too. )

You can spend 5 times as much for racing brake fluid.

Will you notice the difference?

Hard to say . I'm not you?

All I know is the Valvoline is very cost efective and it made a big difference in the feel of my pedal.

I consider it an almost free for me Bomb.

two thumbs up!

Everybody talks about going faster, smoking more, ect. , but the MOST important part of this machine is the part that makes it stop!! Who cares if a can of fluid costs 5 or 6 or even 10 bucks, do it and make sure the system is in good shape. Then we can all enjoy your company for a long time to come,,

Thanks Bob - I used your Valvoline link and apparently the local Wally Mart has it. So it's a thing I'll be doing this weekend as I replace the line that runs front to back and (of course) between the frame and tank.

I agree w/Carl - and was not concerned with the cost of stopping - just wondering where I could get it so cheap and do mine.

Thanks

While you're at it, check out the Syn Power Power Steering Fluid also. It works great too. (that from an ExxonMobil retiree)

Man you were dead on!!!

Bob - THANK YOU!!! Oo. I picked up 2 quarts of the 3 4 today @ Auto Zone ($5. 99 each ;) ) and after I bent up the new line, double flared two new fittings and installed it. I flushed the bejiminies out of the system - like you said with a clear hose on the bleeder valve yuk! the poop that came out was disgusting - no wonder the thing barely stopped.

Test ride Oo. HOLEY MOLEY - it NEVER stopped like this ever!

Highly recommended for everyone to do cheapest/best $12. 00 I ever spent on this truck.

Thanks again,

Joe Mc

PS: I have to recant some of my previous whinnig :{ :{ (in other threads) about drum brakes - they actually work now :D Oo. Oo. :)

Hey Bob - hope all is well with you. It's been about 11 days since the 3/4 swap and I've noticed my pedal is down like it was before the swap :{. However, if I let up on the pedal and get back on it - in an instant it's high and hard again

Think I have some air still - man I blead the living "Hoot" our of it.

Wha da ya think?

Air bubbles

When you bleed them again do it slowly.

When pumping the brakes hold them down for at bit each pump.

Hopefully you'll find some bubbles.

Happy Turkey day

You guy's need to get one of these.

One of the best investments I have bought. Takes about 30 minutes to flush the fluid on all four wheels and flushes any air pockets out. So I understand you are suppose to flush the system every 2 years. Flushing also extends the life of your brake components by removing all the junk and moisture in your system.

Try adjusting the rears up a bit that will give you those symptoms.

Bob

Thanks Bob I'll give it a try - have to check the rear axel bearings today anyway - hope I find one is a bit loose - could be the culprit of my "Vibra Machine" symptom?

Stick with the drum brakes. There is actually greater braking surface with the drum brakes compared to disc brakes.

Also, I just put EGR rotors and pads, along with their braided lines on, and the truck feels great! Had a couple of air bubbles in the lines, but took it to a local Les Schwab and had them bled. Next, I'm going to get an exhaust brake this spring, just to also be on the safe side. I have to agree with CarlJensen in that we all look to up the power to tow heavier loads, but how many of us don't look at the braking systems. Stock, our trucks have plenty of power to get 20k GVWR rolling at 60mph+, so we really have plenty of power. It's all about stopping that load when it comes time.
