I've been in Law Enforcement my entire adult life, 1572 days till I retire!! I used to never have a firearm with me off duty, never saw the need. But the way things are going, I have been throwing it in a drawer in the motorhome or in the console of the truck and forget about it.

Your right about the way things are going, it seems that there are a lot of criminal types that roam the freeways and if they happen to pick you, it's usually when your most vulnerable. I pulled over and took a few winks one night in a rest area and awoke to a tapping noise on my window, here stands two idiots tapping a large hunting knife against my window, I always kept my Glock in the door pocket, loaded for bear and their faces changed quickly when I held up my finger like to say hold on a minute and out came Mr Glock! They didn't stick around to see if it was loaded or not! I have carried it for many years thru many states and it's a shame that it has to be that way, just watch the news or some of these cop shows, they are out there and at some point in time you will run across them. I hope that you don't! You have to keep it in your head that your safety starts with you, don't put yourself in a place or situation that makes you vulnerable, I'm not saying you have to be paranoid but use your head. I have been pulled over and I always keep both hands on the wheel and let the officer know that there is a firearm holstered in my door pocket, I haven't had a problem to date! Thats my two cents... .....

When crossing from the USA into Canada a while back, I presented my paper work for the rifles and shotguns I had with me to the border guard. I was directed to a parking area and told to report to an officer inside the office. The officer ran me and my firearms through the computer and then asked to inspect the same. I led the officer out to my 5th wheel and into the front bedroom where I took a gun case out from under our bed. I opened the case and undid the velcro hold down straps, at the same time informing the person that this was firearm #1 on the list. At that point they put down their clipboard and took ahold of the barrel with both hands and pulled the rifle, muzzel first, directly toward them. At that point I told the officer to FREEZE. You should have seen the look on their face! I carefully reached over and moved the barrel far to the left, away from their gut. They realized what they had done at this point and asked "it's shurley not loaded is it? eh". I told her ( yes, is was a her) that they are all always loaded. She told me to unload it, so I opened the chamber showing her it was empty. I then told her that you always treat ALL fire arms as if they are loaded. Her red faced reply was " you don't need to be telling my super do you?, eh". It would seem that the reason they don't like firearms is that a lot of them don't know anything about them.

I find that having NRA decals on my truck and 5th wheel is a pretty fair deterent. One word of advise, if you choose to cross into Canada without firearms, be very sure you have removed ALL of the ammo, spent or not. If they see an empty cartridge they may very well tear your RV apart looking for the weapon it came from. Guess who gets to put everything back together when they are done.

There is a publication that I have seen in the NRA magazine and also at the Sportsmans warehouse so it must be in a lot of the sportmans type retailers that list all the states and there regulations for state to state transportation of weapons. Be very careful with Canadian Customs. They don't always read and interpet there laws the same. I carry a Mossberg 500 with a 18. 5 " barrel also it has a pistol grip stock. I went through Canadian Customs from Alaska with the pistol grip on and it was fine. Coming back later on through North Dakota they went into orbit and were going to confiscate my shotgun as they said it was illegal. When I explained it come through Canada that way already it made no difference. What the law says is a "folding stock" is illegal and this was not a folding stock but a pistol grip. Here we had 2 different interpatations of the law. My saving grace was I had the regular stock in the truck and put on the gun in there presence and was allowed to press on. So just be careful on what you do. Above all do not take any handguns with you, that is really a no no. Also my wife had a purse size key chain style mace unit and they took that. They are really upset over that mad cow deal..... so watch out with your can of Cambell's beef soup. Only kidding.

Never again...

#1, Never kiss and tell. Big brother may be watching.

#2, I have and will do what I feel I need to do, regardless of what others say and think.

The system has failed me for the last time. The only agency, department or person I can count on is me. I learned this the hard way.

#3, I will beg for forgiveness before I ever ask for permission.

I have asked the system for protection and service only to be put on hold, told they cant help due to budget cuts or they had to release someone thanks to over crowding... . I have paid more than my fair share and their answer was still, "No". In other words, sorry Mr. Tax Payer. You're on your own? Nope, I don't think so. .

Never again!

Several years ago I was rear-ended while at a light. The damage to my truck was minimal, but would require a new bumper. This was before cell phones and the police were nowhere around.

The guy was getting pretty PO'd when I asked for his lic and insurance info so I could get on the road. He wanted to write me a check for the damage... I said no, I would handle it via insurance. As he continued to get more verbal, he finally said if I as gonna be such an a-hole, that he wanted My insurace info.

I said sure, come on around to the passenger side and let me get it.

I opened the glove box, pulled out the Smith . 40 and my insurance info... Let's just say, he was a lot more reasonable after that. Better to be safe than sorry!

I later learned from his insurance agent that he was on high risk insurace and very close to being cancelled.

I always have at least a shotgun (Benelli Novi) and a handgun (Kimber . 45) and let my wife know where they are in case I am away and she might need it.

Most of the time we are camping in remote areas and I doubt 911 could even find us ;)

Some years ago, before cell phones, my family and I were camping in Clear Springs, MS. We were awakened by a man and woman 3 campsites down yelling at each other. When the man started slapping the woman, I got in our truck and went to the park warden's trailer. He then called the police. The police came over and questioned the man (we couldn't hear exactly what was going on) then the cop left!! Well, the man knew who why the cops came so, at 3AM, he starts breaking camp with as much noise as he could possibly muster. This was only an hour or so after the cop left, so we weren't even near sleeping yet. Once he packed up, he started driving slowly toward our campsite. We had no phone and could not have called the cops; even if we had a cell phone, they couldn't have come back in time. He gave us the dirtiest look I'd ever seen on a human, then he did the smartest thing he'd could possibly do... he drove off. My brother, my father and myself were standing there watching him--behind our backs, my brother had a . 357, I had my . 44 Ruger Blackhawk and my dad had his . 38 S&W. God help this guy if he had pulled a gun. My dad was in his late 60's and my brother and I were our late 20's, but he had to fear my dad the most--he could shoot and seldom missed!! Did this guy sense something and keep going? Would it have been different if we didn't have our guns and would have shown fear? We'll never know, but those guns were the only things between us and him.

I am a life member of NRA, yes I carry a gun and have pulled it twice in self-defense and, yes, I know enough about guns to know when NOT to shoot, my whole family does because our dad taught us. Guns are our ONLY defense when the legal system lets us down! Conditions will only get worse as more and more criminals are set free because of flaws in the legal system and smart trial lawyers. If you believe dialing 911 will help when there is someone already in your house or in your bedroom, then you must believe there is only one Mickey Mouse in DisneyWorld :-laf.

Sorry this was so long, but it hit a nerve. I've SEEN first-hand how a gun can protect you IF YOU KNOW HOW TO USE IT!

If the firearm remains in the trailer while traveling you can have the gun/shotgun/rifle loaded can't you?

An unloaded firearm is more dangerous than a loaded firearm. Mine is loaded and in my RV all the time, except when we go into Canada.

If this is what you've always done, by all means continue.

What we've done here is decided for OURSELVES what out future will be, it will not be a strangers decision.

As long as there's still a choice, this is the one I will make. And probibally longer.

I know from your perspective we Yanks are gun crazy but I don't think it's true. I would point out one case that happened on your side of the fence a few years back. I refer to the incident at Liard Hot Springs. The only thing that stopped the killing was a Yank with a rifle in his vehicle. Your park people were still on the phone requesting instructions or whatever.

The above incident involved a Black Bear. People, bad people, are infinitely more dangerous. Consider this: "The Iraq theater of operations, during the last 22 months, gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000. The rate in Washington D. C. is 80. 6 per 100,000. That means that you are 25% more likely to be shot and killed in our Nation's Capitol, which has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation, than you are in Iraq.

Gun Control Ha Ha Ha Ha

THE only way they will ever take my guns from me is when im dead and yes i carry a 45 with me when i travel i do alot of driving by myself and don't trust anyone look at southern cali right now atleast 1 time a week we are hearing that someone on the freeway got shot at or killed its getting out of control here you cant drive down the freeway without getting shot at . and here i thought texas was bad few years back i was on a trip through dallas and got shot at by a armed robbery suspect driving down the freeway still have door with marks to prove it . back to point yes i know its not legal to carry my pistol but ill deal with that when time comes .

shorty

We had the "Goodyear" airship here a couple of years ago and I was talking to the crew about how comfortable they felt about the idea of an engine failure. They weren't much worried abut that sort of thing but were amazed that when ever it came time to do an annual inspection they would invaribly would find a couple of bullet holes in the envelope.

Like several others, I will neither confirm nor deny that I have (or haven't) any firearms, nor any info about carrying them.

As far as the NRA stickers go, that's something I won't do. That's an invitation for a B&E.

When I was in my early twentys, went car camping with two other friends. We parked the car on the side of the road and carried our camping stuff about a quarter mile in and set up camp. We had a radio, small cooler, backpacks, and sleeping bags. Turned in for the night just sleeping on the ground. In the middle of the night we were awakened by four guys and one of the had a shotgun pointed at us. They took most of stuff and thank god no one was hurt. It took me a long time to get the nerve to go camping again. Do i carry a firearm when camping ? YOU BET Browning Hi Power 9mm with two 13 round clips packed with hollow points.
