Just ordered an EZ, and now hoping that the Auto can handle it. All the salespeople say, no problemo, but----? Anyone out there running the EZ with an auto, stock? Just bought a new 01,and naturally don't want to RIP the transmission out of it, but want MORE POWER. Also, if I do put a shiftier valve body in, is it difficult to do, myself, and is it really a 'must do'?? Thanks for advice etc. Neil

As long as all you add is the EZ our transmission should handle it just fine. I drove around for 8K miles with a Power Edge and my transmission never slipped.

I would also hightly reccomend the DTT stuff, the change you feel when installing the ez is equal to the feeling of a new VB/TC.

I just purchased an EZ about 2 1/2 weeks ago. And my transmission is stock. The transmission seems to be holding up fine and there are alot of people running around this site that have done the same thing I have and what you are considering.

Rule # 1 : Get Gauges!!!

I am currently running the stock exhaust system with an Amsoil filter. I have heard alot of people say that you should upgrade this before adding an EZ. I would tend to agree but I have not gotten the exhaust upgrade just yet. My EGT's have not gone over 1100 degrees so far but I'm at sea level and I am not towing anything signifigant enough to worry. This is another reason to have gauges.

The problem you will find later is that after the EZ. Then comes injectors, then you have to upgrade your transmission, then improve your turbo, then... ... well you get the picture :D

My plan is to upgrade my transmission ( DTT ) before next year and then get injectors because with both you will shred your transmission. :(

Good luck!

PS added on edit..... ooopppssss you already have gauges. Doohhhh!

EZ with AUTO

Problem is my boat weights about 12000 lbs. What happens now?? 26' diesel boat, HEAVY. Will the stock transmission handle this?? Shift kit, only means, SHIFT, not I'm getting a hernia?? Did I waste my money??

A good friend of mine has a '98 auto. Last week I loaned him an EZ for a day just for kicks. I personally drove the truck around and carefully watched the truck to see how his transmission responded to the extra power. Around town, there seemed to be no problem. My only concern was merging onto the freeway under heavy but not full throttle. The torque convertor locks up under heavy throttle and pulls the engine down to 1800 rpms. It took approximately 2 seconds of clutch slippage before the clutch fully engaged. In my opinion that is too long. I removed the box.

I know that many people are running around with a stock transmission and an EZ with no problems. This is just my opinion.

10K of truck and no problem......

What's your gearing? 4:10 or 3:54? That will make a difference when towing.

Mine was just fine with just the EZ and the truck is fairly heavy. Bill K reccomended raising the line pressure. Seemed to help some. Go to his web site and there is a place under valve bodies that describes the process.

Unfortunately I am a power junkie and now with the DD2's the transmission doesn't stand a chance. Having to baby it really bad till my transmission mods come in. :( :(

The good news is if you feel its a problem once you get it just unplug it and there will be a line of buyers at this site willing to take it off your hands.

Another member and I went camping last week. He had just installed and EDGE EZ. All he has is 4" exhaust and guages, stock trans. His trailer weighs around 10k. He had no problems.

However, I agree with the above posts. Give DTT a call. I towed before and after DTT mods. there is an incredible difference in power to the ground. IMHO, no you didn't make a mistake with the auto.

I've had an EZ (on level 3) for the past 12,000 miles and I tow about 12k with my gooseneck trailer. I never once had any problems with only the EZ with a stock transmission. I did add an aluminum transmission pan that upped the transmission capacity by about 2 quarts to help with cooling. I recently upgraded my transmission with some DTT goodies, but that was in preparation for DD2's, which are now on the way. :D

I have had an EZ for around 15000 miles in my 01' . I just increased the line pressure in the trany as per DTT instructions and also chancged to ATF3. The ATF 3 I an told does not handle heat and does last as long but allows the clutches to hold better. Watch the heat , without exaust and or intake mods the motor can get warm . Take off the muffler and add the the huge Napa filter and it should be fine. Brian Mallory :)
