Help On towing weights on a 2003 3500srw

I have a new trailer rated to 14,800 its a gn It curently has 1,600 lbs on the hitch.



I am trying to figure out if I am within my GVW total and dont really understand all of it. I plan to weigh it as I add stuff to the LQ on the trailer and need to have figures to shoot for I would like to run completly legal.

Going from memory.....



GVWR of your truck alone, with passengers in it and hitch weight is 9900. Gross combined (with your trailer) is 23k or 23. 5k if you have 4. 10's and six speed. The 3. 73's lose a little rating and the auto might too- Dodge has a site where you can look all this up. There should be a sticker in your door jam too. It's going to be close if you get the trailer near max.

Weighing everything is the way to go. I believe your GVWR is 9900 lbs like Rockcrawler has indicated and your GCWR is 21,000 with 3. 73's and 23,000 with 4. 10's.

As I said, weigh your truck. Mine (dually, six speed) weighs 8338 lbs with me, a full tank of diesel and my add on's. IF yours weighed 8,000 lbs, then:



- you have the legal payload capacity of about 1,900 lbs and a legal max trailer GVW of 13,000 lbs (with 3. 73's).

Well, since you asked...



Check the link in my sig for the Towing Guide for the 2004 RAMS. I don't have the info for the 03's, but the 04 guide might get you close. There is also a link on my web site for an article on RV towing weights. If you have an 03 with the 47RE automatic, the GCWR is reduced from the HO 6 speed/48RE models. Some more info about your truck would help.

mine is a LWB auto S. O. with 3:73 I am not sure which auto. I am going to start weighing the truck and trailer soon. The trailer weighs 5,600 empty I added 475 lbs so far but will add a little more as time goes by. I will be hauling about 4. 150 live weight during heaviest trips. so I have a few thousand to play with. I really want to run close to or below legal but with farm tags I will have a little play. I just want it all figured out so no suprises if something happens.

Your truck will scale around 7,400 or so with you in it. Add the 1,600 on the hitch and you're around 9,000 on the truck; 900 below gvw as you sit now.



Add in passengers and load the trailer you're getting close...

Per Dodge site for 2003 Ram 3500 4x4 SRW... Same as my truck if short bed I printed and saved for reference when I got my truck...



with 3. 73 axle

GVWR=9900 lbs

Payload = 3040 lbs

Curb weight = 6855 lbs

Curb weight front / rear = 4078 / 2778 lbs

GAWR front / rear = 5200 / 6150 lbs

GCWR = 21,000 lbs



With 4. 10 axle - only change GCWR to 23,000 lbs

Based on what you said you wanted to tow you will probably be under in the Gross Combined Weight but it is very easy with a goose neck or fifth wheel to go over the GVWR of the truck it self.



Best advice I would give you is what you have said you are already going to do... WEIGHT IT!

I believe all S. O. automatics were the 47RE.
