I moved up to my '16 3500 w/Aisin replacing my '06 SRW 3500 auto and '99 DRW 3500 5spd. The '99 was heavily modified for towing really heavy. Once I bought the heavier toyhauler, neither truck survived towing for long, I constantly swapped from one to the other as things broke and trucks in the shop.
Since I bought the '16, this truck has never been in the shop for anything but routine maintenance. 80K miles later - best decision I ever made. Yes, the payment is a big thing to swallow, going from 2 paid for trucks. Would I do it again? Definitely. Between the other trucks, I was doing 2-3 trans rebuilds/yr, front end rebuilds every 2 yrs., and constant other issues. I was close to spending the same annually on average as the payment on the new truck. And had to deal with downtime, towing, finding shops, etc.
Just my experiences - but a DRW vs SRW is no contest - DRW is much more stable, just better feel, even with 5th wheel. Similar to going to a 5er from a bumper pull in comparison.
