Ok, well I cut my 4 1/2" hole in the firewall (compliments of EMDDiesel's hole saw - thanks!), and got the Psychotty all ready for installation. But first I drove out to my "test strip", see results below (I have SPA gauges, so I reset the peaks after each run - no guessing at max EGT):

Current set-up (K&N in stock box w/ snorkel, air horn, whatever you want to call it removed): Run #1 max EGT=1301, Run # 2 EGT=1329.

Psychotty w/ 0880: Run #1 max EGT 1350, Run # 2 max EGT 1364.

I did let the truck cool down between the trials for the 2 set-up's. The truck was up to normal temps before any runs. Tests were done within 30 minutes of each other on the same strip, 1 run for each set-up in each direction. All runs were from a rolling stop, <5mph, with A/C/vent off and windows down.

Needless to say, I'm not very happy. When I installed the 0880 by itself, it run as cool as the current set-up listed above.

The Psychotty itself was a pain to install - the intake hose from the turbo to the filter is too long, so it's a PIA getting it on the turbo after connecting it to the 0880.

Guys, let me know if I'm missing something, or if you have any advice, tips, etc. to make it work better, but mine is installed just like the pic in the directions - Psychotty even rotated to exactly the same orientation. I even loosed my Neg cable on the passenger side battery and twisted it over to one side to give the max amount of room. Not very happy right now.

TXRam... that is an interesting post!

It is also the first time I have heard that about the Psyscotty, but I believe when all of the earlier tests were being done, the SPA gauges weren't very common. Most of the earlier complaints were about the noise level after drilling thru the cowling.

Anyone else with SPAs done some testing? It would be difficult to misconstrue the results when the SPAs record the peak EGTs.

As I said before,How can they claim its the best for our Rams when here is a true test,,I'm not sold on any product that pulls air from a negative source with MUCH smaller holes that the stock box,,Think of the Hp and air intake size of a large truck,,If you would neck down the intake to use many smaller holes ,such as the cowl on our Dodges, what would the EGT's do??,,Climb sky high,,What we need is an intake that allows us to benefit the ram air capabilities available(short of spending $ 1400 on the Air Bull dog junk) and make efficent HP without having to butcher our trucks to do it,,Psychotty is a very poor design and it does not take any one much to figure out why it does not work,,Sorry to hear you had to cut your truck and not gain anything... Bummer... .

TXRAM,

I joined the TDR to read and reply to worthwhile posts, this being one of them. I read about the Psy and was not "moved" into putting my $$ on the counter. Lets face it, and I know I will get slammed for this one, there are some members out there who spend a lot of money on unproven trash. You have conducted an undisputable test with sad results. I would be mad as he!! after cutting a big a$$ hole in my truck only to find LESS than advertised results. I would see how much they will back their product!

As I read these posts I realize many must justify their spending so much on un or poorly engineered products, they will brag, yap, and NEVER reveal the truth... maybe they do not know it! Even the freebie mods, i. e. removal of the silencer ring, cat, (I wasted my time on that useless operation), do some members suffer from heavy wallets, or just plain boredom? Slide out from under it, slam the hood and drive it!

I will leave the e-mail notification operative so as the boys can expess their opinion and I will enjoy reading the flow of sheer genius response.

Mike

P. S. Right now, as we speak, I am in the production mode of high performance muffler bearings so act now to obtain the best price! These bearings will be made of Hastalloy with TIN coating to enhance their long term heat and wear resistance.

TXRam,

Sorry to hear about your results with the Psychotty. That has not been my experience. I do not have SPA gauges, but the way I tested mine was seeing what the EGT was at a given speed up the same hill. My tests showed a drop of 100 degrees. Was your tests done at WOT or at a given speed? Sometimes the filter is pushed too far forward and chokes airflow. These are the only things at I can think of right now, other than making sure all the clamps are tight, although I don't know if that would affect EGTs or not.

I'm sorry that it didn't work like the manufacturer says. Thats what i like about these fourms. Common people, real tests and real results. If you are not happy with the product send it or take it BACK. Members beware:rolleyes: Just because you have a manufacturer telling you how great there product is, it may not be better then STOCK!

Not advocating or 'dissin' the psychotty... I don't have one... but I remember reading several times over that the most benefit (largest drop in temps) is realized when towing... or hauling a good load. Then the difference noticed is significant. That makes sense because of the load on the engine. If you're really workin' it and it's truly breathing better, you should see a difference. Just a thought.

I have had the Psychotty in for almost 6 months now and as soon as i installed it i noticed almost a 110degree tempature drop in EGT. This drop is further increased while running under load such as up a big hill. You wont recognize the true advantage while driving down a highway. I am sorry your test did not turn out the way you wanted, but the Psychotty worked great for me, i saw the difference in EGT right away. I am not the only one to agree with this.

As for the hose being to long and difficult to install, did you slide the turbo hose OVER the K&N's rubber collar?, that is how it is supposed to be. Take the hose clamp off the K&N and discard it, the only clamp you will need is the one already on the black turbo hose. You put the short metal ring inside the K&N filter inlet then slide the Turbo hose over it and clamp it down. Mine slides right into place with no difficulty at all.

Just a few more things to add . . . and a few more questions.

Test was WOT 0-95mph, 95 degree day here in TX- 38-39psi boost with an HX-40 - true, no trailer, but truck was under "load".

It took me 10 minutes just to get the intake hose ALL THE WAY up to the back "wall" of the 0880. The filter is "seated" properly in the Psychotty - won't go more in and can't come out more b/c of intake hose. Did everyone use the rubber collar that came with it to line the hole in the cowl, maybe that keeps it to far back in the engine compartment. I will say I didn't think the Psychotty was much louder than the stock box with mod's I mentioned before. Some, but not much.

The only other difference that I forgot to mention is that I have one of my wife's old pantyhose legs over the 0880, but I don't have one over the K&N in the stock box. I'll put one over it and repeat the tests tomorrow. But a stretched out pantyhose (to keep leaves, bugs, etc. out of the pleats) shouldn't restrict flow.

You guys that did notice a drop, what was your exact set-up previous to the Psychotty? I am sure it makes a difference over the totally stock set-up, but I now believe my mod's (K&N in stock box with snorkel removed) make just as good an improvement. Like I read somewhere else, figures don't lie, but liars do figure.

Don't get me wrong, I heard all of the other testimonials, good and bad, before I purchased this. And no held a gun to my head either. I was the only one holding my drill cutting a big a$$ hole in my firewall, too. I knew it was a gamble, but I did it. I'm not flaming Scott - like I said, it probably is a big improvement over totally stock. But I think we should know the exact paramaters regarding the people that see improvements (previous, exact set-up with max EGT compared with EGT w/ Psychotty - EGT's being from a test similar to the one that I performed).

I'm still trying different things, if I find a problem, error, or something I did wrong, I will let everyone know. But based on what I know right now, I would not recommend a Psychotty. That being said, anyone want a good deal on a very slightly used PSychotty w/ filter???:D

Before the Psychotty i had a stock airbox with a K&N. And yes, i did use the rubber ring in the hole i drilled for the Psychotty. I am really sorry it did not work for you. If you do decide to remove it, a piece of aluminum flashing siliconed in place will take care of the hole. I have also heard of drilling a few holes in the psychotty kit to increase airflow.

Psychotty

That panty hose leg will add restriction. If that restriction were, say, 20%, then most likely you lost all of the advantage and some of the flow you originally had. I have used K&N filters for years. They do not need any help. Just my humble opinion.

Pantyhose on a Cummins... ... ... that's so you can sneak up on the power-chokes, and the dura-pukes without them recognizing you!

But seriously folks, try breathing through a piece of pantyhose, then try running around the block breathing through it, then imagine your poor Cummins running down the road straining to breath through it... ... get the picture?

Pantyhose

Shovelhead, On that "breathing through pantyhose while running", does the lady remove them first? I wanna make sure I do it right the first time!

Breathing through panty hose while running down the street?

What did you say you do for a living? Rob banks? ;)

Alright . . . ALRIGHT . . . enough already! Now y'all have got me all embarassed. :p

I did read that on here before.

But I'll test with and without it today. I know the K&N doesn't need it, I just wanted something to keep everything besides just dirt (bugs, leaves, etc. ) out of the pleats in the K&N - I had the K&N in the stock box, and it is a pain cleaning all the crud out of the pleats. I was just trying to prevent that. I figured the pantyhose would be alot less restrictive than a foam pre-filter.

Anyways, I'll post the results tonite or tomorrow morning.

Pantyhose is certainly a restriction. But I don't think running down the street with it is a valid test! You could say the same thing about running down the street with a KN Filter sealed around your face.

I will be interested in seeing your results, tho. I use the foam prefilter over my RE-0880. (Scotty System) I forget what the extra restriction for it is, but it was pretty minimal. I would hate to run down the road breathing thru it, either.

I got bad results too

Hey txram I to have just installed my psychotty with poor results. I did some before and after test using 3 different set ups at street and highway speeds and pulling a long hill. My end results with the psychotty was a 100 egt increase at same speeds and conditions as other configureations. Mine also was a ***** to get on very tight fit, bent my intake hose so much it is no longer round, kind of flattened it a little. It to is properly installed. The only time i noticed a slight drop is when pulling a hill, but only by 50 egt drop. Going camping this week hauling a 25ft trailer with bikes etc. gonna see how it does. If still remains poor i will go back to 0880 with pre filter which showed best even sucking that hot air, and I live where it gets over 100 daily. If you show any improvements let me know. This is just my results and like txram I am not dissing psychotty or any other person using it. Just not satisfied yet. Later Dwayne. :(

Sorry to hear of your bad experience with the Phscotty, mine is the opposite. I've had a Phscotty on my 3500 for over a year, it only hauls heavy loads (see sig) mostly on the same 40 mile round trip up to 8 times a day, seven days a week for four months a year, lots of known miles to compare results with different systems. Before the Phscotty I was using a stock airbox K&N, had to back off on the throttle and down shift quite a bit when the EGTs climbed. After the Phscotty I rarely need to back off and can take two large hills in one higher gear, it has shaved approximately 8 minutes off a round trip. That comes out to about an hour a day times four months = 120 hours a year. That's like not having to pay a driver (or myself) for three weeks. At the $10/hr I paid my driver I save $1200 a year, I can buy 6 new Phscottys a year and still be ahead. It works well for me, I think you must have yours incorrectly installed or don't have enough of a load. A Phscotty is a waste of money if you aren't towing. My 2 cents.

I also think there is a certain HP level that the psychoty will become a restriction. The HX40 moves alot of air. . maybe to much for that setup JMO
