I'm looking to get a new or late model 2500 or 3500 srw CTD, and budget is $45k. If I get new it will probably have to be a Tradesman, but used maybe a BigHorn, or Laramie.
Should I stay away from the double radiator years, 8.4 radio problems that control everything, or anything I don't know.
I definitely want warranty on what I get, due to all the emissions on them now.
I know my 03 is still going ok at 230k, but I'm 66, and getting tired of fixing stuff, would also like the towing power of the newer 6.7.
Thanks for any advice.

Sound good Steve, I also wonder if the 3500 rides much stiffer than the 2500 with rear coils. My 5th wheel only weighs 10k, but a lot of people say get the 3500.

It's better to have more if needed, than need and not have

I would suggest possibly purchasing a warranty insurance program. I did with my truck when I bought it 2 yrs ago. It was used with 42k. The option that I went with was 48 month/48000miles. It has paid for itself almost 3 times

J, I would love to have the truck in your sig with the Aisin, and I am looking at the 3500's.
Zac, thats a great idea, and would you know the name of a warranty company for used trucks?
Thanks Gary

The company’s name is “Vehicle One”. If your budget allows you to go new, by all means do it. If you can I would look for something that you like with low miles and get this along wit it to take the burden off of your mind and possibly your checkbook if the need for it arises. The option I purchased included engine, drivetrain and electronics. Best of luck finding what you want

I bought a new 2015 Laramie in Sept 2015 as the new ones were hitting the market and got a good deal on it. I also purchased the factory MaxCare 8 year 120K warranty, as I was 71 at the time and not up to trying to fix things myself anymore.

This high volume discount dealer on the East coast is said to make good deals.

BTW, we like the 8.4 nav/screen. We do not have the aux switches, so more normal functions remain on hard switches. We also love the full front console that comes with the bucket seats.

And I like the looks of the 18" Laramie wheels the best.

I would like to put out a warning on buying used trucks to you. When purchasing a used truck make sure that it is a truck that was sold in the US and not Canada. Both of my sons have purchased used trucks in the pass from dealers with both being sold in Canada and then reimported to the US. This did not really matter all that much when my older son bought a 1999 Ford 7.3L Powerstroke as this had no emission equipment to worry about.

My younger son bought last year a used 2013.5 Ram 6.7 Cummins from a dealer in Iowa, this also had been reimported from Canada for sale in the US. Will the truck has run fine for a year with no problems at all but he has had four recall notices from FCA for this truck. The first time he took the truck into the local Ram dealer he was informed that they would not honor the recall and he would need to drive the truck to Canada for the recall service. Will that won't happen! Since than he has received three more recall notices. With a couple of the notices for emission related issues, will he finally had a major issue with the DEF system and the truck wanted to go in to LIMP mode. Will the truck went under the knife on Saturday for surgery and everything is fine now!

But as a warning to you make sure you purchase a US sold truck as this will eliminate and recall or any other issues that you may encounter.

I upgraded from A 99 CTD cummins I still have the truck and still love it . DW wanted something newer and more plush. So in 2015 we purchased a 2013 Ram 3500 CCSB 6.7 cummins with the AISAIN TRANS. This truck is completely stock and it is a beast. I tow a 35 ft toyhauler and My GCVWR is 22K. The truck Hardly knows the trailer is there! Not one failure other than recalls. I have 0 complaints with this truck! I brought the lifetime bumper to bumper warranty for $3K have not had to use it yet! Love love this truck! My only suggestion is if you are gonna keep it stock get the Aisian trans. Good luck

Thanks Chris, I hear a lot of good things about the Aisin, and I'm going to try to get one. I only tow a 10k 5th, but if I ever went bigger it would be nice to have.
