Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Is this the time?

still on original LP and VP44 but still to low miles to crow yet <50,000.

But I'm wondering if if anybody has any insight on whether or not geographical

location has any bearing on failure rate? What I'm getting at is does low

temperature operation and/or winter blend fuel seem to have any measurable

effect?

Not long enough!!

Four lift pumps in 44K and VP, 2 weeks ago at 45K. FASS is going in on Wednesday with all AN fittings, hopefully this is the solution.

BTW I rarely pulled or hauled heavy with my truck and only run a DDTTPM (edge EZ).

Too bad a un-reliable fuel system is the limiting factor on an otherwise incredibly reliable truck/engine combo!

First VP44 at ~=65k. Second VP44 @ ~=105K. Went through 8LPs before going with a FASS. I Installed the FASS when I changed my VP44 for the first time. Only 40k out of the recon pump.

lift pumps and VP-44's

Well replaced my fuel filter the other week and found about a dozen grains of sand and 2 pin head size pieces of yellow paint. What do you think do I need to replace the fuel filter sooner? The grounds I checked the other day were all good continuety wise were good. The VP-44 is still getting bad voltages to it and is running worse then it was when I got it new. The idea of the truck not running without the L/P is false! Mine ran for about a year or more without the L/P. It was and still gutless and runs lick c****#$$$. For I went from 130 RWHP to 175 RWHP so the extra 45 HP was noticeable. Not bad out of a 235 engine!!!!!!!!!! :-{} Junk since new, I like yellow Cats.

My pump started failing at app. 58000 mi. Now, about 8 months later dealer has finally ordered new vp44. Tech told me originally to drive it till it quit. But that was extremely irritating because you never knew when you were going to experience a dead pedal. I have the original LP and a Geno's gauge and it has never been below 12 PSI at idle or 10 at WOT. I believe my problem to be the electronics in the vp44. The only code I get is p0216. I now have app. 69000 mi. on 2002 5-speed with no mods.

Wow. . did this old thread bring back a few memories. . with the postings of HVAC... .

151,000 on the VP. . lift pump number 2... had a fuel pressure gauge on the truck since it was 2 months old...

133228 Pump wire never tapped. Anti-gelling additive only. I was still reading 10lbs of pressure. Pusher kit added 20k ago.

77000 mi. No prior power problems, just went dead like key was turned off. Had just finished clearing a mountain pass in AZ, was out on the desert flat when it went dead.

A little more info. Even though my truck was out of warranty I contacted Chrysler and requested that due to this injection pump being a known issue for the last few years that they should cover the repair. At first they denied me as I was out of warranty on time, but this afternoon they agreed to cover the cost of the parts. All I have to pay is about $400. 00 for the labor and tax. I can live with that. Just keep making noise and eventually some good may happen.

Mine died at just about the same mileage. Pulled up to a toll booth, pushed in the clutch and the engine just shut off... . Rolled up to the attendant, handed over the fare and glided over to the side of the road. Dealer replaced it and the lift pump under warranty but not without a fight. I have since replaced that one due to electrical issues with another having the updated electronics. Running just fine and will turn 130k this weekend.

I frequently check for the ECM 0216.

I'm on vacation?

Had the dreaded dead pedal 52k.

Went to Rally Dodge in Ocala FL( 100 miles into a 2200 mile trip). They changed lp. Immediate 0216, they said they were NOT going to change the VP.

Drove through Chattanooga mtns to Montecello IN. Hendrickson Dodge replaced cam shaft position sensor to clear the 0216. Took it back after another 0216 and they replaced the VP-44. Took 5 days to get the VP (1 day for DC to approve the shipment from Minnesota and 2 days for UPS to get it to Montecello IN) and install it (1 day to get into a service bay, 1 day to install it)

Have new lp, camshaft position sensor, VP-44. Adding a RASP when I get home in 2 weeks.

I thought I had done everything humanly possible to keep the VP happy. It still was dieing. Characteristics of the 0216 would be dead pedal for 2 seconds, then full normal power for hours. I did not let VP totally die and leave me stranded.

After talking to the mechanic at Hendrickson Dodge, I really think I made a mistake with the Mallory 4307M bypass regulator in that it "might" have restricted fuel volume supply eventhough it maintained 12 psi at the VP-44.

His take was as much fuel available to the VP as possible without going over 14 psi. He recommended changing the lp every 12 months regardless of what output it was giving and sooner if it was starting to fail and go below 14 psi.

rweis,

my 2nd pump was doing the same thing. I'd be running along and then nothing for a few seconds or longer, then off we would go again. Started out just once in a while then more and more frequently until I just didn't trust it anymore. I can't remember the code but it was an electrical issue with the pump. Blue Chip Diesel in NH replaced it with one that has the updated circuitry used in the delivery trucks. Not a lick of trouble since.

My vp-44 died rather unexpectedly... . there was no suffering... . it went out at 143,660 miles. It was on it's 4th lift pump. There was a "pow", "pop", a dead pedal, no start, and the wallet just opened.

Herman8r - there is a thread on RASP running right now. Do a search on RASP and there is another couple of days reading.

just replaced my vp under warranty at 84000, lift pump has been changed twice in the last 50k. Took it to Karl Klement Dodge in Decatur, TX on monday morning at 9, they called at 9:45 and said they were gonna change the pump. At 2:30 that same afternoon they called and said they were done and i could come pickup the truck. I was shocked, talk about service.
