I'm purchasing a 1911 style Dan Wesson Patriot, and wanting to carry it in the Dodge, and preferably under drivers seat. Any suggestions? Thanks, and appreciate and ideas.

I've got a hard plastic holster that fits between the drivers seat and center seat. I shove it down flush with the seat, and just drop in my 357. you can't see the handle from the outside... pretty trick. Can't remember who makes it. It was in a catalog at a local gun shop.

I just carry mine in the center console thing when I take it with me in the truck. Someday gonna get a good IWB (Inside Waist Band) CCW holster for my Springfield Armory . 45.

I'm not sure how your laws are, but in Colorado, the gun can not be concealed unless you have a Concealed carry permit.

So personally, I just put my 9mm in it's holster and throw it on the passenger seat, along with placing the clip in the ashtray.

I haven't had to use it yet, so I'm not to concerned about having the gun loaded.

Then why carry it? If you don't have the time to load it when you need it, it may do you more harm than good, potentially. Notice cops don't keep their ammo in their pockets? Lot's of them go an entire carrer without "using" a gun. Not a flame just something to think about.

I totally understand your rebutle, but Trust me, by the time the average person reaches down to their holster and pulls out their gun, mine will already be loaded. It doesn't take me but only a moments notice to load it.

With all of the cops in my area and the way that they are, the crime is far worse for having a loaded or concealed gun, then having the gun unloaded with the ammo close. Here in CO, the typical sentence for carring a loaded or concealed gun is about 2 years. Is 2 years in jail worth carring a loaded gun... I don't seem think so.

Glenn, don't worry, I didn't take it as a flame, I totally see your point.

KArts, in Colorado there is a thing called "eminent domain". Your personal vehicle is covered by it and basically what it says is that your vehicle is YOUR property just like your house and your land. You CAN carry concealed inside your vehicle legally, but don't get out with it concealed anywhere on public property. There are some restrictions such as federal property and such. Look into it.

LSMITH - Thanks for posting that info. I wasn't aware of it. The last time I went to court for a ticket the judge pretty much told me that I was lucky I didn't have my weapon conecealed in my vehicle because he would have locked me up. But I am definately going to check into that.

Dixie Dawg;

I just keep mine in the center console. One thing to check on, here in SC it's okay to have the gun loaded in the center console and glove box with out a carry permit, but they don't like it under the seat. I don't know if a permit makes this legal, or even if this applies to Georgia. I think SC has a thing about it being in a latchable compartment. Being 6'6" and rather large, I don't think I could get the gun out from under the seat as fast as I can get it out of the center console.

Hope this helps;

Josiah

Multiple good locations.

Disclaimer: Get a carry permit or it is ussually illegal. Check you laws. They change fast. www.packing.org Good info sometimes late though.

Real quick is door pocket. I have rags for emergencies in there toss one over the gun and whola concealed even when you get out but real quick if you need it even if standing in the door.

Underseat. your can use the belt tabs of a belt holster to fasten to the "spring " wires. A little slow to draw. Lean straight forward. Practice required to get it fast. :) The best place for large guns I have found.

5spd 4X4 can drop it on the leather between the two shifters Cover with rag or something. Also quick but requires movement towards middle visible from outside to reach it.

Between Driver and middle as was stated above. Small guns

Lay it on the center seat and lay down the center console. It hides between. Works for large and small but large guns are hard to get out smoothly.

Depending on th weapon. our middle chair has a funny bracket that could hide a small pistol. (Mine has an inverter) 1997

Put a seat cover on. Create something in it. Requires a little sewing :) A patch of 1/4 foam lining a pocket can cover up the shape and make it look like upolstry bumps.

Be creative. Sit in your seat and reach around without moving too much, see where your arms get. Then make a way to put a holster there.

May you never need it but if you do you want it in hand fast and without the oponent seeing odd movements in the cab. That may cause them to be more apt to fire. That could mean you created the deadly situation by trying to protect yourself. If they know you got it they ussually won't mess. Surprise is YOUR advantage.

A lot of it is based on the discretion of the arresting officer. If you have the unfortunate luck to get a rookie, or someone on a power trip, you just got screwed. Most of the old timers will turn a blind eye if you are not causing any other problems. They view the vehicle as an extension of the home, and apply the same rules.

You can only get in trouble for a concealed weapon if they find it. YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO SUBMIT TO A SEARCH OF YOUR VEHICLE, AND YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO SUBMIT TO A SEARCH OR YOUR PERSON IF YOU ARE NOT UNDER ARREST! They count on the fact that honest law abiding people feel guilty about saying no when they have nothing to hide, and the guilty try to appear innocent by saying yes when they do have something to hide. You have the right to secure your belongings, make arrangements for someone to come and get your vehicle if you do get arrested.

I know that there are a few officers in the membership, and hopefully they will chime in and correct me if I am wrong, as well as keep you aware of the rest of your rights.

I was almost positive you can have a loaded pistol in a vehicle (in plain sight) but not a loaded shotgun or rifle in Colorado.

It's been a few years since I took the CommiCalifornia gun test - but as I recall, you were NOT legally allowed to keep the gun AND the clip/ammo in the same accessable area of the vehicle unless you had a carry permit - you had to keep the gun in one area - glovebox, seat, etc - and the clip/ammo somewhere completely separate - trunk, rear toolbox, etc...

Problem for travelers is, laws vary so much from state-to-state, you hafta carry one of those gunlaw encyclopedias with you, and change gun strorage at nearly every state line to be legal...

Shall issue?

All the more reason to push your state house to pass a "Shall Issue" Concealed Carry Law. Keeping an unloaded weapon for self defense is like keeping a Dodge Diesel for transportation with no fuel in it except for when you need to go somewhere. Not a same-same analogy but I think it gets the point across. If you're more concerned with the cops than the perps when it comes to your weapon of choice then I suggest mace, pepper spray, etc.

For me I keep one in the console at all times and will carry another on my person when carrying. The seat thing is a bust IMHO if get hit by one of the jackers that will pull a fake rear end collision. At that point your perceived speed in loading your weapon has just been extended assessing the situation, retrieving your weapon from floor, etc. Just my thoughts though. Probably couldn't get mine out of the console any faster for all of the junk.

Mostly right--a cop can look through the windows of the vehicle and act on whatever things are in plain sight, no search warrant needed. For example, you get pulled over with a pound of marijuana on the floorboards of the passenger seat. The dope is in plain view, so the cop doesn't need a search warrant to sieze the dope and bust you. It's for things not in plain sight that the need for a search warrant comes into play.

If you get pulled over for anything substantial (ie, typically more than just a traffic offense) the cop might do a pat down search for safety reasons. There really isn't any justification for pulling somone out of their vehicle and doing a pat down search if you catch them going 50 in a 45 zone. However, there might very well be other things that might warrent the pat down search. For example, going 50 in a 45 zone in an area known for drug activity, at 3am in a beater car with 5 young guys in it--in that example, any cop with any brains at all is going to ask a few other units to join him, pull everyone out of the car, ask what they're doing, run them all in the computer to see who has warrants, etc. But first of all, before anything else, pat them all down for weapons.

I should also point out that the concealed carry laws are state and sometimes local laws, not Federal, and as such will vary from state to state or even city to city within the same state in some circumstances. Jrobinson1 gives good advice when he says "get a carry permit or it is usually illegal".

I don't think it's so much whether a cop is an old-timer, or appears to be on a power trip or something that guides how he/she will treat gun situations, but rather if he or she personally holds anti-gun attitudes or not. From my experience, cops in larger cities more frequently hold anti-gun "let's get those guns off the street" kinds of attitudes, but that's not to say a rural cop might not think the same way.

Oh well, just my $. 02, and that's probably just what it's worth. :D

Good point across the board. I would say it's worth a bit more than $. 02.

The bottom line is, if you must carry a gun with you, and you are a basically law abidding citizen, you don't have too much to worry about. If you participate in illeagle activities or fail to use common sense, the gun is just going to be one more coffin nail. Keeping a good defense lawyer on retainer will also keep you informed.

I personally only take the attitude adjuster with me on road trips out of the city. If someone is going to carjack me in the city, my life and the life of my passengers is more important to me than the truck. But I swear to the powers that be, it's a race between the police and my family to find the MF first. And if the police win, I am not going to wait for the justice system to take care of it. Been there, done that, and all I got was "We will issue a FTA warrant for his arrest, but we'll probably never catch him. " The suspect will be safer in police custody.

I'm a little bitter, can you tell?

Good information in this book http://www.gunlawguide.com/

I read somewhere that an officer can also do a pat down search of your vehicle interior, basically any space within your reach. Most states won't allow a gun under the seat.

Does anyone know of a box with a combination lock that fits under the power seats? Genos sells one that fits under the non power seats. You could leave the box open while driving but close and lock it quickly when pulled over or leaving the truck. I don't think a locked box can be searched without a warrant.

Not only state laws apply............

counties and cities may have more restrictive laws, too... ... ... .....

I keep a Beretta 96F in the console. In over 20 years of carrying various firearms in my vehicles, I have yet to need one. Peace of mind is priceless, though.

I have one of those triangle shaped handgun safes at home that you open by pushing a combination of buttons on the top. It would fit under the seat, but you couldn't get to the top of it then. Bummer... .....
