I got a letter in the mail from my dealer today. Here's how it reads; Important update for pending recall #H46 on your vehicle. Chrysler has determined that, in certain circumstances the drage link inner joint may fracture under certain driving conditions. This could result in a loss of steering control and cause a crash without warning.

Has anyone else gotten a recall letter like this? I was suprised that no one else had posted about this. Do any of you dealer techs on TDR know what this recall entails?

That's strange, because recalls don't usually come from the dealer. Also, the recall that has the whole new front steering components, I didn't think affected our 05's.

I have an appointment Tuesday to do mine. Apparently it requires many parts. I first called the service dept and they transferred me to the parts dept to make sure they had the parts to install and they have which they graciously earmarked for my truck on Tuesday. I will report once it is finished.

Is it just for '05's and 06's, or all 3rd gens? Mine has pulled to the right since the night I drove it off the lot 6. 5 years ago !!!

I didn't receive anything regarding this for my 06. Is it all of them? Mine is an October 05 build, I believe. I'll dig around and see what I can find because mine is starting to get loose in the front end. Little clunks, bad tire wear, etc.

Safety Recall H46 – Mopar Steering Linkage

I was in www.techauthority.com last night and down loaded the safety recall your refering to. So yes its real. if you want a copy go to the link I provided, pay $20 bucks for a 24 hour membership and download the TSBs for your VIN.

Below is the subject from your referenced TSB. I dont think I can post it due to copyright stuff.

"During a prior service appointment, a Mopar service parts steering linkage was installed on about 19,400 of the above vehicles. The drag link inner joint may fracture under certain driving conditions. This could result in a loss of steering control and cause a crash without warning.
Also, the steering damper bracket at the tie rod tube may loosen. This could allow the bracket to slide on the tube and may cause increased vehicle turning radius. "

I hope this helps. By the way it was revised in May 2009

Click on the link Dodge - Contact Us it show mine has the recall.

SAFETY RECALL H46 - MOPAR STEERING LINKAGE

Dear: (Name)

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle

Safety Act.

Chrysler has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in some 2003 through 2009

model year Dodge trucks.

The problem is... During a prior service appointment, a Mopar service parts steering linkage may

have been installed on your truck (VIN: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx). The drag link inner

joint may fracture under certain driving conditions. This could result in a loss of

steering control and cause a crash without warning.

Also, the steering damper bracket at the tie rod tube may loosen. This could allow

the bracket to slide on the tube and may cause increased vehicle turning radius.

What your dealer

will do...

Chrysler will repair your vehicle free of charge (parts and labor). To do this, your

dealer will inspect the steering linkage on your truck and replace steering linkage

component(s) if required. The inspection will take less than ½ hour. If linkage

replacement is required, the work will take an additional ½ hour to complete. However,

additional time may be necessary depending on service schedules.

What you must

do to ensure your

safety...

If your Dodge truck had any steering repairs after March 1, 2008 or you do not know the

service history of your vehicle, contact your dealer right away to schedule a service

appointment. Ask the dealer to hold the parts for your vehicle or to order them before

your appointment. Remember to bring this letter with you to your dealer.

If you need help... If you have questions or concerns which your dealer is unable to resolve, please contact

Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

Please help us update our records by filling out the attached prepaid postcard, if any of the conditions listed

on the card apply to you or your vehicle. You may also update this information on the web at

If you have already experienced this condition and have paid to have it repaired, you may send your original

receipts and/or other adequate proof of payment to the following address for reimbursement: Chrysler Recall

Customer Assistance, P. O. Box 21-8007, Auburn Hills, MI 48321-8007, Attention: Reimbursement.

If your dealer fails or is unable to remedy this defect without charge and within a reasonable time, you may

submit a written complaint to the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1200 New

Jersey Ave. , S. E. , Washington, DC 20590, or call the toll-free Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236

(TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to Safercar.gov.

We're sorry for any inconvenience, but we are sincerely concerned about your safety. Thank you for your

attention to this important matter.

What it boils down to is this... ... ... ... if you did the upgraded steering kinkage early on you may have gotten it partially done. IE no pitman arm to match or you got the smaller clamp for the steering stabilizer that may slip,or if early enough it may have an improperly heat treated end that may fracture.

If you have the oem steering linkage it is inspected in the service drive and you are on your way.

Safety recalls always require a notice be sent to you in the mail. All 03-earlier 08's will be sent the notice as they have no way of knowing who may have purchesed the parts over the counter.

So, if nothing has been touched , and they see nothing is broke, they will just send you on your way, and do nothing, correct?

For instance, I had the 08 steering upgrade done under warranty last December, but also decided to upgrade the pitman arm by paying for it personally at the same time. For $75. 00 i thought it was a smart thing to do, based on what I was reading here on TDR, LONG before the safety recall. I was also fortunate, in that when I the upgrade was done, the newer parts, with larger bolts and damper, were installed. SOOOOOO... when I went in for the current recall, even though I was no longer original steering parts, they ALL checked out and I was sent on my way.

That sounds like the usuall cheapish recall that Chrysler somehow talks the safety board into. Take for instance the out of park alarm. Did they really fix the problem? Nope, they just released themselves of the liability. I guess that could be part of the reason why they're all going bankrupt.

Ran my vin and it's in there. Guess I'll be calling the dealership tomorrow to make an appointment. Recall was dated 04/27/09 and I never knew about it until TDR.

I LOVE TDR!!! A wonderful resource! :D

Just ran my VIN and it came up as "INCOMPLETE" also. For gits and shiggles, I'll pop in later this week and see what they say, replacing my hitch Tuesday, that comes first!

As an added note my dealership in Fl. would not sell me any individual parts, only the new kits. This was at least a year ago. I wondered why then, now I know.
